How to Choose Between a New and Used ATV

Choosing the right ATV can be tough as it is, and the hardest part is choosing between a new and used ATV.

When choosing between a new or used ATV, I always like to look at three things. They are 1) Cost 2) The ability to get financing, and 3) Frequency of use. Before I explain why these three things matter most, I want to give you a real-life scenario I had not too long ago in the showroom.

A young man walked into the showroom with a down payment of $3,000 in cash, and was coming in to look at a used ATV that I had for sale at about $4,495. The plan was to purchase the ATV, assuming it was in good enough shape, and then finance the rest (the goal being to get the lowest payment possible). The unit was a few years old, had a lot of mileage on it, and looked like it was ridden heavier than normal. When the customer walked in they had no intention of getting a new unit, until I asked them three simple questions to determine the best option.

1)      How often are you going to be riding?

a.       He responded by saying his goal was to ride it someone heavy and often.

2)      How much were you looking to pay?

a.       He wanted to pay up to the amount we were asking for the used ATV.

3)      Are you financing?

a.       He wanted to finance for the remainder of the bill of sale.

By asking these questions I determined on my own that a new unit would likely be better for him for a few reasons. 1) If he’s riding it often, then he’s probably going to want the warranty of a new unit, and the peace of mind knowing that it wasn’t beaten up too bad in the past. 2) Can-Am has their adult 450 models starting at $5,999 with rebates at the time being at about $500. Why not pay $1,000 more for the peace of mind knowing it’s a brand-new ATV? 3) Financing for the ATV was going to be a lot better for a new unit then it was used. At the time, I could get him Financing as low as about 3.5% for up to 60 months through a local lender for the new ATV. The used unit was at a year and time where the best financing I could get was over 10%. If I remember correctly, because of the brand, it was 15% for a shorter term. Because of the financing difference, his monthly payment wasn’t too different for each of the ATV’s. He ended up leaving with a new ATV that day and a large smile on his face!

If you’re ever wondering if you should go with a new ATV, or a used ATV, just assess the condition of the unit, then ask yourself the three questions above.
